Funding policy - types of grant
The principal types of grant are:
-
Major grants - These are awarded predominantly for national or regional appeals and normally range in magnitude from £5,000 to £25,000. In exceptional cases the Trustees may make larger awards.
- Minor grants - A fixed sum of money is earmarked each year for minor appeals. These grants are aimed specifically at organisations, usually operating at local or county level, where a small grant, currently to a maximum of £3,000, would make a significant difference to their ability to operate. Competition for these awards is intense and priority will usually be given to charities working in areas of severe deprivation. Appeals can fall within any of the eligible categories but, at this level, they are more usually within the areas of youth and education, general welfare and conservation.
- Recurring grants - With the exception of a restricted list of perennial grants, the Trust does not make recurring or multi-year donations. Each grant is thus a one-off payment and there must normally be a gap of at least two years between appeals from the same charity, whether successful or not. Furthermore, applicants will be discouraged from submitting appeals for a longer period of time following the granting of three awards over a five to six year period.
The number of appeals that can be supported, and the size of grants awarded, will vary from year to year. It will depend not only on the quality of the appeal, but also on the income available for distribution.
