Eligibility

The Trust is able to consider applications only from registered charities or those with officially recognised charitable status. It cannot under any circumstances provide support for individuals.

On this page, we outline briefly the geographical areas we support, the areas of activity to which we give priority, and the amount of financial aid that we offer under our different types of grant.

Geographical scope

The majority of the Trust's work is in support of national and regional charities operating in England, Scotland and Wales, especially in areas where there is a significant amount of deprivation, and particularly where a grant would make a real difference to the recipients. See details of the charities we have supported during the last year.

The Trust is rarely able to support charities operating within Greater London and in Northern Ireland.

The only area outside the United Kingdom which receives grants from the Trust is Africa, where a small number of charities which have a long association with the Trust in East Africa, and occasionally South Africa, receive funding predominantly for work in the field of education.

Funding priorities

The eight categories of activity supported by the Trust are described in detail under funding priorities. There are a number of areas of activity which are not supported by the Trust. These are outlined under exclusions.

The category that generally receives the largest amount of support from the Trust is Youth and Education, followed by General Welfare. See grants awarded for a breakdown of the sums awarded in the previous financial year.

Types of grant

We divide our grants into two principal types: major grants, for national or regional appeals, and minor grants, aimed at organisations operating at local or county level. A very limited number of grants are awarded on a recurring basis.

See types of grant for more details, and for the range of sums of money that are awarded within each type of grant.

Is your appeal likely to be successful?

All appeals that fall within our policy guidelines will be given very careful consideration. However, due to the large number of applications we receive, many will unfortunately be unsuccessful, particularly where there are many similar appeals within the same category of activity.
