In February 2017, we awarded Gingerbread £30,000 towards peer support for single parents.
Gingerbread is the only national charity supporting single parent families. With a staff of just 60 they provide free of charge advice and information, training and skills, and peer support in England and Wales. The Peer Support Network offers a crisis management tool in the early stages of single parenthood. Users choose how to connect with their peers and, vitally, when. Through their membership, online forum and local group network the charity empowers single parents to connect and overcome isolation, build resilience and access information and support.
- An average 850 are signing up for Gingerbread membership each month, exceeding the charity’s target by 100.
- 80-120 members are joining the online forum each month.
- The charity has developed new partnerships which are helping members access more affordable family days out, for example Camp Mates offers exclusive dates and reduced rates for single parent holidays; free access to the Science Museum ‘Wonderlabs’ in London and Bradford; and free tickets for Gingerbread single parent families to attend various West End Shows.
- Established ‘Facebook Works’ as a repository for support resources and a community for Volunteer Coordinators to share advice on running a peer support group.
